Ancient Greece – What Made This Civilization So Influential?

Ancient Greece is often discussed because of its influence on philosophy, politics, literature, architecture and science.

One interesting aspect is that Ancient Greece wasn't a single centralized state. It consisted of independent city-states, known as poleis, with their own laws, governments and armies. Athens and Sparta developed particularly different political and social systems.



Athens developed direct democratic institutions in which eligible male citizens participated in government. Sparta followed a contrasting system and became particularly associated with military discipline.

The civilization's intellectual legacy is equally fascinating. Greek philosophers explored ethics, politics, knowledge and nature, while writers and artists developed influential forms of drama, literature and architecture.
