Berkeley Law Admissions Investigation – What Are Your Thoughts?

The Berkeley Law admissions case is raising an interesting question for people following U.S. higher education: how should universities apply holistic admissions policies after the Supreme Court's 2023 decision restricting race-conscious admissions?

The U.S. Justice Department and Department of Education recently announced findings alleging that Berkeley Law used race-related practices in admissions and discriminated against white and Asian applicants.



Berkeley Law has disputed the allegations. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky said the school's admissions policy does not consider race, while UC Berkeley said it would provide evidence supporting its compliance with applicable laws.

The case could become an important example in discussions about admissions fairness, diversity, applicant evaluation and civil-rights law.
