How Are Biodiversity Hotspots Identified?

Campus reveiw
Biodiversity hotspots are identified using specific biological and conservation criteria rather than simply ranking regions by the number of species they contain.

Under the widely used framework, a region must contain at least 1,500 endemic vascular plant species and must have lost at least 70% of its original natural vegetation.

These criteria highlight places where exceptional plant uniqueness overlaps with significant habitat destruction. Conservation work in such regions may include habitat protection, ecological restoration, wildlife corridors, and collaboration with local communities.

The Campus Review's biodiversity hotspot classification guide provides an introduction to the criteria, regional examples, and conservation challenges.
