Rivers can be studied using several characteristics, including their flow patterns and channel shapes.
Perennial rivers generally flow year-round, intermittent rivers flow during particular periods, and ephemeral rivers carry water mainly after rainfall events. Exotic rivers begin in wetter regions and continue through drier landscapes.

Channel patterns provide another classification. Meandering rivers form bends, braided rivers divide into shifting channels, and relatively straight channels occur in certain geological settings.
The Campus Review provides a student-friendly overview of these classifications, examples and the importance of river systems.
