layers of Earth are different in composition, depth, temperature and physical behavior.
The crust forms the outer surface, while the mantle extends much deeper into the planet. Beneath the mantle are the liquid outer core and solid inner core.

These layers are not simply identified by direct observation. Scientists use seismic waves, Earth's magnetic field and other geological evidence to investigate the planet's interior.
