Roman territory changed dramatically over the centuries. Rome began as a city-state, developed into a republic, and became an empire under Augustus in 27 BCE.
Its expansion brought much of the Mediterranean world under
Roman control. Later, military pressures, political instability, and internal divisions contributed to the loss of western territories.

Maps are useful for following these changes and understanding why particular provinces and frontier regions mattered.
