How Much Do EU Students Pay for University in Europe?

Ethen parker
Tuition fees can vary considerably for EU students depending on the country, university, degree and study program.

One important EU rule is that an EU citizen studying in another EU country cannot generally be charged higher course fees than students from that country.

However, this doesn't mean that every EU university is free.

Germany, Denmark, Finland and several other countries have public universities with very low or no tuition for eligible students, while other destinations charge annual fees.

The Netherlands, for example, has a statutory tuition fee of €2,694 for the 2026–27 academic year for eligible students.

So, when comparing universities, students should look at both tuition and total living expenses.
