Is There Really a Person With the Highest IQ?

Online articles often present a “highest IQ in the world” ranking as if it were an official scientific leaderboard. But the reality is more complicated.

Guinness World Records retired its “Highest IQ” category in 1990 because different IQ tests and scoring systems made comparisons unreliable.



Marilyn vos Savant is historically associated with a reported score of 228, while Terence Tao is often associated with an estimated score in the 225–230 range. YoungHoon Kim has more recently been associated with a claimed score of 276, although the methodology and comparability of such extreme scores are disputed.

This makes the subject interesting beyond the numbers themselves.

What exactly does an IQ score measure? Why do different tests produce different scales? Why are scores above the normal testing range so difficult to compare?
