NYC Schools Introduce New Restrictions on Generative AI

New York City Public Schools has introduced a major new policy restricting student-facing generative AI.

The one-year moratorium applies to students in grades 2-K through 8 during the 2026–27 school year. High school students will instead receive AI literacy education and limited opportunities to use approved AI programs under teacher supervision.



The policy is part of a wider discussion about how schools should balance emerging AI technology with critical thinking, human interaction, academic integrity and student safety.
