What Are the Different Types of Poetry?

Campus reveiw
Poetry includes a wide range of forms and styles. Some follow specific structural rules, while others are defined by their purpose, subject or approach to rhythm.

For example, a sonnet traditionally contains fourteen lines, a limerick commonly uses five lines and an AABBA rhyme pattern, and a villanelle uses nineteen lines with repeated lines. Free verse, by contrast, does not require a fixed meter or rhyme scheme.

Other categories describe what a poem does. An elegy reflects on loss, an ode expresses admiration, and a ballad tells a story.

Understanding these distinctions helps readers analyse poems and gives writers more options when developing their own work.

The Campus Review's guide explores 12 types of poetry with explanations and examples.
