If you're researching the world's highest peaks, Mount Everest is the obvious starting point. At 8,848.86 meters, Everest is the highest mountain in the world when measured by elevation above sea level.

The list also includes K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. In total, 14 recognized mountains rise above 8,000 meters.


These peaks are located within the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain systems of Central Asia.
