Human evolution is the scientific study of how humans and our extinct relatives developed over millions of years.
Educational resources sometimes divide this history into seven stages to make it easier to understand. These frameworks commonly introduce early hominins, australopithecines, early members of the genus Homo, Homo erectus, later human groups, Neanderthals and other relatives, and finally Homo sapiens.

However, the exact categories vary by source. The evidence does not support a simple sequence in which every species directly evolved into the next. Instead, human evolution involved multiple branches, overlapping populations and extinct lineages.
The Campus Review's article provides an accessible introduction to the 7 stages of human evolution and the major developments associated with human origins.
