What Is the Difference Between Species Richness and Species Diversity?

[Campus reveiw]

Species richness and species diversity are related, but they are not identical.

Species richness simply refers to the number of different species in a community.

Species diversity considers richness together with the relative abundance or evenness of those species.

For example, two habitats may contain the same number of species but have different diversity if one habitat is strongly dominated by a single species.

The Campus Review explains this distinction along with diversity indices and ecological examples.
