Harvard University has
agreed to pay $53 million to resolve lawsuits brought by families whose relatives' donated human remains were stolen and sold.
The case involved former Harvard Medical School morgue manager Cedric Lodge. Prosecutors said he stole organs and other parts from donated cadavers and sold them through a black-market network. Lodge was sentenced to eight years in federal prison.

The families accused Harvard of negligence and argued that the university should have had stronger safeguards to protect donated remains.
The settlement also includes non-financial measures. Harvard Medical School plans to publicly acknowledge the wrongdoing and create an annual scholarship honoring anatomical donors.
The case is significant because it raises questions about how medical institutions protect donated human remains and maintain public trust.
