What are the main types of rivers?

Rivers are commonly classified according to their flow characteristics and channel patterns.

Perennial rivers flow throughout the year, while intermittent rivers flow during certain periods. Ephemeral rivers carry water mainly after rainfall events.



Rivers can also have different channel patterns. Straight, meandering and braided channels are major patterns studied in fluvial geomorphology.
