Which Historical Rulers Had the Most Lasting Impact?

Campus reveiw
When discussing famous rulers, it is tempting to focus entirely on conquest.

But historical influence can also come from administration, law, political organization, cultural change and ideas.

The Campus Review's guide examines 10 rulers from different civilizations and periods.

Cyrus the Great expanded the Achaemenid Empire and is documented as allowing conquered peoples significant freedom to maintain local institutions and religious practices.

Ashoka represents another model. His inscriptions describe his response to the violence of the Kalinga campaign and his later promotion of ethical conduct.

Meanwhile, Qin Shi Huang's unification of China, Augustus' transformation of Roman government, Charlemagne's promotion of learning and Napoleon's legal reforms illustrate very different types of historical influence.

The complete guide provides a useful starting point for comparing these rulers without reducing their histories to military victories alone.
