Which city was the most important in ancient Mesopotamia?

Campus reveiw
There probably isn't one simple answer because the importance of Mesopotamian cities changed over thousands of years.

Uruk is one of the strongest candidates because it became a major center of early urbanization and is strongly associated with the development of writing.

Ur was particularly important during the Ur III period and became a major political and cultural center.

Babylon rose to prominence under Hammurabi and later became one of the great cities of the Neo-Babylonian period.

Nineveh became the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and was associated with the library of Ashurbanipal.

Nippur had enormous religious importance and was associated with Enlil.

Other important cities included Eridu, Kish, Lagash, Mari, Sippar and Assur.

What I find interesting is that each city had a different role in the development of Mesopotamian civilization.
