Why Do Countries Have Such Different Population Sizes?

Campus reveiw
Population differences are shaped by many factors, including geography, fertility, mortality, migration, economic development and historical settlement.

The 2026 population ranking places India first, China second and the United States third, with Indonesia and Pakistan also among the largest populations.

But population totals only tell part of the story.

A country with a large land area can have a relatively low population density, while a smaller country can have millions of people concentrated in a limited geographic area.

Long-term trends are also important. UN projections show that countries including Pakistan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo could rise significantly in the global population rankings by 2054 and beyond.

The Campus Review guide provides a broader look at these demographic patterns.
