Why are Europe's oldest universities still operating today?

Europe has several universities with origins dating back to the medieval period.

What interests me is not simply their age, but how these institutions managed to evolve alongside major changes in European society and education.



For example:

Bologna — 1088
Oxford — c. 1096
Cambridge — 1209
Salamanca — 1218
Padua — 1222
Naples Federico II — 1224

Many of these universities started with strong traditions in areas such as law, theology, philosophy and medicine, while their modern academic offerings are much broader.
